This 8-podcast series is all about the player development hiring season currently happening in sports.
This week the newsletter and the podcast will talk about the actual interview. My hope is all of you reading this newsletter will have an opportunity to interview here during this hiring season.
I will discuss three tips to help those of you who are preparing for an interview. On a previous podcast episode, I detailed the 5 interviews I had in the player development role:
Check out this episode to hear more about my interview experiences, there are some gems in there as well.
Interview Tips
1. Listen
Every head coach, athletic director, general manager, president, and executive leader in sports has an introductory press conference.
During these press conferences the two things ALWAYS are focal points:
The performance of the team
The emphasis on out of competition impact
Because of this you are able to get so much valuable information from those who you will be working for or who will be interviewing you.
When I prepared for interviews, I listened to what the head coach said the production on the field and off the field would be. Of course, I was locked in on the off the field production. I would take notes on the areas the head coach mentioned in his press conference and keep it for the interview to see if these plans are genuine or coach speak.
After listening to the main press conference, I would listen to local reporters interviews to the coach because they are going to ask specific questions about the plan for the program. Sometimes they ask what the coach will do in the community, and this provides even more information for you.
USE YOUR TWO EARS AND LISTEN.
2. Research
You should get an itinerary for you coming interview, when you receive it. Research every person whose name is on that itinerary. Check LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Google, podcasts, check it all.
They will most likely have something on the internet related to their position which you can use for your interaction with them during your time with them.
The one regret I have from one of my previous interviews was I didn’t research the university, I spent a lot of time preparing for this certain position and knowing the staff and forgot to research the university.
3. Plan
These schools will give you pain points as you go through out the interview. Take the pain points and create a plan that addresses the most common pain point you heard throughout the process.
DON’T GIVE THEM EVERYTHING but give them a solid plan of action you will have in the role.
