Helping Athletes Transition
I recently wrote about speaking at the Athletes United Conference. The video above details some of the questions I was asked.
One of the questions I was asked is: How can athletes get ready for their transitions?
I am no transition expert and I have met many who do a great job with this. I have created a quick “formula” to help those who are in a transition. I actually was able to use this three weeks ago when I had a conversation with a former player from my time at the University of Houston.
I subscribe to the 3 R approach: reflect, relationships, and resources.
Reflect - being a college student- athlete is a great accomplishment and there most likely were moments, times, and things the athlete experienced that many others walking the earth haven't. I feel as people we are so quick to move to the next stage of life without reflecting on everything achieved in the last stage of life.
Relationships - I tell athletes all the time to take a picture of those who were with them on their signing day, their move in day, and their graduation. The people who are in these photos are typically people who truly care about the athlete. As the athlete transitions they can lean on those who have been there for them in their lives.
Resources - There are a lot of resources for athletes on the campuses they are on. Athlete development's importance and commitment to staffing has skyrocketed the last 10 years. There are many people now, not only on the campus, but in their athletic department and in some cases their teams who are willing and able to help the athletes as they transition.
Hope that helps you and let me know what is your advice to athletes as they transition.
