3 Ways to Engage Your Former Players
Alumni engagement may be the GREATEST area of impact you're missing out on.
I have been talking about alumni engagement for years on my podcast, but recently realized I never took time to dedicate a podcast to this topic.
I personally believe alumni engagement is one of the most overlooked aspects of engagement in sports.
This is one of the strongest bonds organically created through the shared experience of a person being an athlete of the program once in their life time.
This area can also create one of the biggest areas of impact and influence for the current players already in a program.
But how do you engage alumni in a way which benefits both sides?
In my experience in the role the best way was to:
BUILD
MAINTAIN
EXPAND
BUILD
You want to create as many relationships you can with your former players as possible. Building can look like a newsletter, an email, or a social media post communicating with your former players you want to build a authentic relationship with them.
P.S. Don’t forget your newest alumni who are often forgotten.
MAINTAIN
There will always be a person or a group of former players who have stayed close to the program for a period of time. These are your former players who immediately found ways to stay connected to the program they love. As you build new relationships with your former players, remember to maintain the relationships you have with the day ones.
EXPAND
Once you have built and maintained relationships with your former players, begin to expand to alumni of the university you may be working. Whenever I ran onto a college football field the stadium with be packed with alumni who passionately show up for their alma mater yearly. That group is a great group to engage and create opportunity for your athletes. Get to them and expand your teams engagement to those who love their school.
I discuss these three and more here in this podcast:
