Interviews Are Coming! BUT...
When you are interviewing you don't want to give them everything, take it from me.
It’s that time of the year.
As unfortunate as it is, coaches are getting fired and new coaches are being hired.
I have shared this in a VIDEO before, but after new head coaches make their initial foundational hires for their program, they will then begin looking for someone to develop their players in January.
THIS MAY BE YOUR OPPORTUNITY.
You need to be ready and prepared.
With that said, here is some advice I would like to give you as you may get the opportunity to interview with a Director of Football Operations, Chief of Staff, or a Head Coach.
DO NOT GIVE THEM EVERYTHING!
Now you may be thinking, so how do I get the job?!
Don’t worry I have a plan for you.
I only bring up not giving them everything because when I was interviewing with an SEC school in 2022, I was so desperate to find a player development job, I almost gave them my entire plan for their program.
Thankfully there was someone wise there who told me, HEY DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR STUFF.
I asked why and he said they would just use my efforts and tell the person they wanted to hire to use them as a blueprint.
I AM SO GLAD I LISTENED. Because I found out they were having on campus interviews and had offer the position to someone else while I was in the “interview process.”
HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO…
Give them the strategy not the plan.
Give them the overview not the details.
Give them the dream not the vision.
You want to lay out as much direction as you can without pressing start on the GPS.
This may sound crazy but it will help you greatly for the following reasons:
You keep your plan and make yourself more valuable. People love mystery and knowing there’s more.
The entire plan will be too much for them to remember what you said.
Most likely they honestly won’t care about player development like you do.
Most coaches have someone they want to hire but know that person doesn’t know the role. BUT if you give them the plan they will hire that person.
I want you to crush the interview if you are fortunate to get one. I want you to be prepared, but I also want you to protect yourself during these interviews.
