Student's Guide to Player Development
Answering the questions that many sports management students have about player development.
Since 2016, when I was first announced as the Director of Player Development for Houston Football, I have received a massive amount of messages from students wanting to talk about player development.
Early on I tried to answer all of them I could, I was pretty successful at getting back to those who reached out. As time went on and I mastered LinkedIn, largely in part to Will Baggett, the messages were constant and daily the inbox was filled. As I did previously in my career, I wanted to answer all of the questions and jump on every Zoom, but as my family began to grow and my priorities shifted, I had to find new ways to answer without taking a significant time out of my schedule.
To help answer the questions more efficiently, I have answered questions back in messages, I have video or even voice recorded my answers to those who reached out. Even as I have done that, the amount of inquiries has increased. So, I wanted to create a resource that would help me answer the questions of the students and keep my schedule open for personal commitments.
I was once a sports management student and know how it feels to have a professional in the sports industry make time and impart wisdom and knowledge in your journey. My desire will always be to help the students who have seen the growth in player development and are interested. With that said, in answering questions I noticed there are frequently asked questions. These questions I love answering but I have also realized there has to be an effective way to answer these.
This is why I have created the Student’s Guide to Player Development, it is a combination of a document and videos in which I will continue to add insight on as the questions continue to role in. I appreciate all the students who took time to fill out the survey and provide me with questions for this resource.
On tomorrow’s podcast I will answer the following 10 questions and there will be a link to download the additional 23 questions I was asked. Below are the 10 questions I will be answering.
The 10 Questions
How to get an internship with player development at the university?
How to position my myself to get opportunities in the sports industry as I’m working on my master’s degree?
How to network in person. What events should I look into?
What are good places to intern other than colleges for sports?
What does an everyday perspective look like as a Director of Player development?
Would graduate school be a good option?
Can I get in contact with some Player Development personnel around the country?
What is the most challenging part of working in player development?
What certifications are recommended for success?
What is the best path for someone to take if they are interested in working in pro sports?
This was a fun time for me, and I hope students are able to get the needed information they are asking for.
