8 Things I Would Look for in A Hire
Why college football may be your best bet for getting into player development at the professional level.
Good people.
I want to start off by saying thank you so much for your support of the newsletter. It means a lot to me. All the reads, likes, comments, and shares are very much appreciated.
The support that you, yes you reading this, have given to Beyond The Field - Player Development does not go unnoticed.
THANK YOU!
8 Things I Would Look for in A Hire
Many of you have listened to The Player Development Pod and realize the one thing I was not able to do in the role was hire a full-time assistant. I wrote a blog about these 8 things I would look for in 2021, mainly because I wanted my bosses to see and give me the help I needed. You can find the blog here: Player Development Blog
I am writing this newsletter to help those who are looking to get in the role and those who are hiring. I want this to be a reference for you no matter where you find yourself in regard to hiring or being hired.
I will just list the 8 qualities/skills I would look for in the person I would hire, I will go into greater detail in this week’s player development podcast.

I am excited to detail why I chose these 8 and how each of these would help me ideally for what I would want to achieve in the role.
If you have any additional qualities/skills, you think should be included mention them below.
College Football May Be YOUR Best Bet
Looking at the statistics of all the content created by BTF, the majority of those who consume content or invest in services are those who want to transition into the role.
With that said many people who find themselves in that stage of their career, let me know they want to work in professional sports.
Now I am all for having goals and chasing your dreams. I try and prepare those who asks questions about the pros as much as I can by taking time to talk to those I know in the pros.
Then it hit me one day, the ones I am closest with in the pros, I BUILT A RELATIONSHIP WITH WHILE THEY WERE LEADING COLLEGE ATHLETES.
I’ll name a few I know below.
If you want me to do a deep dive int professional athlete development, vote below.
Here are professionals who have worked in college and have been a guest on The Player Development Pod:
Dr. Lacee’ Carmon-Johnson, NBA, Toronto Raptors
Dr. Lori Robinson, NFL, Baltimore Ravens
Alexander Martin, NFL, Miami Dolphins
Others I know in the professional athlete development role who have spent time developing college athletes:
Jessica Gray, NFL, Detroit Lions
Sean Pugh, NFL, Detroit Lions
Josh Marriner, NFL, Arizona Cardinals
Austin Moss II, NFL, San Fransico 49ers
Kayla Henderson, NFL, Miami Dolphins
Ashley Smith, NFL, NFL Player Engagement
Arthur Hightower, NFL, Los Angeles Chargers
Fernando Velasco, NFL, Atlanta Falcons
Dr. Jamil Northcutt, MLS, Senior Vice President
There are many others who are working professionally who had a stint in college athletics. Once again if you want me to take the deep dive, please, vote on the above poll.
I would be lying if I said I wouldn’t want to work on the professional level as well, but for those who are looking to get into the player/athlete development space don’t overlook a college opportunity that will give you the experience and propel to places you never though or imagined.
(To those who I highlighted who are working professionally, it’s time for you to be a guest on The Player Development Pod.)
Professional Football Player to Chef
Some who follow @btf_program on Instagram, saw the post highlighting Tobias Dorzon. He is a former professional football player who has turned into a chef and owner of the restaurant, Huncho House.
This was an incredible story I saw randomly on YouTube. The entire story is amazing, but at the 2:30 mark he talks about the transferable skills he acquired from football that are helping him as an award-winning chef.
In the role it is always important to remind the athletes of the transferable skills they are constantly obtaining through their time.
This video is a GREAT reminder of the work y’all do and the possibilities that are out there as you serve athletes.
